A Nature Preserve in the Middle of City of St. Pete
This lovely sanctuary sits on Lake Maggiore, a brackish, salty natural lake that covers 380 acres. Boyd Hill is a gem….it’s an essential natural habitat for native wildlife, and a natural treasure for residents within Pinellas County (which is among the most densely populated counties in Florida), which can be a soothing break from urban life.
Did you know that St. Petersburg ranks #1 in Florida for and # 14 in the Nation for being Park Centric?
St. Petersburg residents have access to a park within a 10-minute walk. The City spends $175 per person on parks where other municipalities average $98 spent per person.
The Hiking Trails are Definitely a Florida Experience
This park is the area’s least discovered yet most remarkable experience with its five distinct ecosystems. It has 6 miles of hiking trails and boardwalks through a variety of habitats including hardwood hammocks, sand pine scrub, pine Flatwoods, willow marsh, swamp woodlands and lake shore.
First Hand Glimpse of Wildlife Abound
Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk but there is plenty to see at all times of the day. As part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Great Florida Birding Trail, Boyd Hill is a refuge for even the most seasoned bird watchers. Catch a glimpse of armadillos at Wax Myrtle Pond, alligators on the shores of Lake Maggiore, and gopher tortoises on Pine Flatwoods Trail. If you aren’t interested in exploring on foot, bring your mountain bike and cruise around the trails on wheels. Bring a snack and enjoy it on one of the outdoor picnic tables.
Boyd Hill is operated by St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation. It includes the Boyd Hill Environmental Center and a bird of prey aviation center. The preserve is used for school field trips and hosts environmental educational programs.
The preserve is open from Tuesday to Sunday 9:00am – 7:00pm weekly and Saturdays 7:00am – 7:00pm (closes at 6:00pm during fall and winter season). The price is a bargain $3 for adults and $1.50 for children.
If you have never experienced Florida wildlife and nature, this is the place for it!
