More About Cortez Florida

The town of Cortez is located about 35 miles south of the city of Tampa near the southern end of Tampa Bay and is in one of Florida's last remaining fishing villages. Some people refer to the town of Cortez as "Cortez Fishing Village." Cortez's exact location lies on the smaller Sarasota Bay on the gulf coast (western coast) of Florida. It is a wonderful place to live for water lovers.

Fishing

Cortez is not just called a fishing village, it really is one of THE best places to fish in Florida. The historic fishing pier area is a deep water space buffered by the barrier islands. If you are an avid and serious fisher, or just starting out and beginning to learn the tricks of success this is a specatcular spot. 

Maritime Museum

Officially named The Florida Maritime Museum is the place to learn about the rich history and heritage so pridefully and proudly held on to by those who have lived in Cortez for generations. There are classes offered at the museum to learn the skiils of the past and preserve Cortez's history. 

Parasailing, Kayaking, Jet Skiing

Being that the waters of the bay surrounding Cortez are much quieter and laid back than other more populated or well-known areas of Florida, this is a great place to enjoy riding on small water craft. If you do not own your own kayak or jet-ski you can rent one in town or on Anna Maria Island just across the bridge. You can even take a parasailing ride high above the area and get a bird's eye view/tour. 

Waterfront Dining

There are many great fresh seafood waterfront restaurants in and all around Cortez. The most popular and beloved waterfront restaurants in Cortez offer a family-friendly laid back atmosphere for a change of pace from more "fancy" dining venues you might come to expect from seafood restaurants right on the water. The Star Fish Company has been a local favorite for many years with its picnic-table seating and historical venue accompanied by resonably priced seafood. 

Seafood Market

If you want to try your hand at cooking seafood on your own, Cortez is one of the best places to purchase your own seafood. Locals like to pick up the best seafood in the area at Cortez Bait and Seafood Fish Market and Star Fish Company Market and Restaurant (also mentioned above under dining). 

Anna Maria Island

Cortez is just across the bridge from the famous Anna Marie Island and the town of Bradenton Beach. Here you will find a plethora of sugar sand beaches, great seafood restaurants, fun local shops, and tons of water activities.
