The North Franklin Historic District is in the Downtown area of the city of Tampa Florida. It was desiganted as a U.S. historic district in 2002. The district is located within the boundaries of of Florida Avenue, East Fortune Street, Tampa Street, Franklin Street, and East Harrison Street. There are eight commericial buildings and portions of three other city blocks within this neighborhood.
North Franklin Historic District, as the name would imply, is full of some of Tampa's best history. This was the first area of Tampa to have street lights, to be paved, to have sidewalks, the first sight of public transportation, and the site of the first commercial buildings in town.
Today it is a charming area of Tampa that holds the stories of Tampa's beginnings. Those who spend time in North Franklin Historic District with quickly fall in love with the preserved elements of the past coupled with modern day entertainment and services.
Things to Do in Downtown/North Franklin Historic District
The Tampa Theater in downtown was built in the North Franklin Historic District in the late 1920s. It was known as one of the most architecturally beautiful theaters in the entire country. This was seen as an entertainment hub on Franklin Street leading to other business and residential buildings being constructed. The famous John Eberson constructed the theater to look like a Venetian palace with a moon-lit courtyard. Business at the theater slowed down with suburban sprawl in the 50s to the 70s and the theater faced being torn down, but citizens of the city rallied together to have it registered as a historic landmark in the 80s.The theater still stands today in all of its architectural glory.
North Franklin has a great collection of restaurants, bars, and breweries, some of the best in the city. Some of the highest rated restaurants located on North Franklin Street include Si-am, Bavaro's Pizza, CW's Gin Joint, Paninoteca Mediterranean Cafe, and The Anchor Bar.
Herman Massey Park is located on North Franklin Street, it is a small neighborhood park featuring a place to get outside and enjoy the garden.
Just a short walk further down North Franklin Street is the official downtown core of Tampa offering countelss restaurants, bars, Lykes Gaslight Square Park and the Tampa River walk just a couple of blocks away on the riverfront.
